1cm = _____m ,  1g = ________kg, 1mm = ______cm, 1mm = ________m
weight (N)  = mass (kg) x _____ . N is for the unit newton. It is the unit for pull or push, that is the unit for ________.
The weight is the downward ________  exerted by ________ on objects.

PROCEDURE

Remember: Volume ( cm3)  = V = L (cm) x W (cm) x H (cm)    (for a cube or any box)
total surface  area (cm2)=  A = sum of the areas of the faces = L (cm) x W(cm)  x 6

activity3: work now with the steel balls and the electronic scale.
Place , gently, the 3 balls on the scale. mass of 3 = _________  g.
Find the mass of 1 ball _________g =  ________ kg
Find the weight of 1 ball ________ N (multiply the mass in kg by 9.8)

activity4: You need 1$ bill.
Find the width of a $ bill in centimeter W = ______cm = _____mm = ________m
Find the length of the $bill in centimeter L = ________cm = _____mm =_________m
Find the area in cm2 (follow steps:) A = W (cm) x L (cm) = ____cm x ______ cm = ________
cm2
Find the area in mm2 (follow steps:) A = W (mm) x L (mm) = _____mm x _____mm = _______mm2

activity5: You need a soda can
Measure the diameter of a soda can (on my desk)  D = ______ cm

Measure  the radius of the soda can R = D/2 = ______cm
Measure the area of the top of the soda A =п R
2 = _______ cm2
Measure the height of the can H = _________cm
Find the Find the volume of the can V = A x H = _______ cm3
Convert the volume in mm3 :
V= п x R (mm) x R(mm) x H (mm) =  п x ____mm x ____mm x ____mm = _____ mm3

activity 6:
Using a meter stick:
Find the width of the Physics lab door in meters W = _____ m = ______ cm = ________ mm
Find the length of the Physics lab door in meters L = ______m = ______cm = _________mm
Find the area of the door Area A = L (m) x W (m) = _____ m x _____ m = ________ m2
Find the area in cm2 A(cm2) = L(cm) x W (cm) = _______ cm x _____ cm = _______cm2

activity7:
Use the bathroom scale to find your mass in kilograms. m = ______ kg
convert to grams m = _______ g .
Find your weight W in newtons W (N)= mass (kg ) x 9.8 = _____ N

activity 8 :
You need an apple and a plate scale (in grams)
Find the mass of an apple (on my desk) in grams m = ______g. convert to kg

m  = _____kg. Find the weight W = _____N (multiply m (kg) by 9.8)

activity 9:
You need a ream of paper. A ruler.
Take a guess ? what is the the volume of on single sheet of paper ? 1cm3 ? 5
cm3 ? 10cm3 ? (about).
You are going to check your guess.
Find the length L of the ream = ______ cm. Find the width W = _______cm.
We need to find now the height of a single sheet. TO do so, lets measure the height of 500 papers:
H = _______ cm. So the height of a single paper = H/500 = _______cm
Volume of a sheet = W(cm) x L (cm) x h (cm) = ________
cm3. where you right ?

activity10:
you need pennies. A ruler.
Let's find the volume of a single penny. Take a guess: V = _______
cm3
Volume penny = volume of a cylinder =п R2 x h in cm3. R is the radius of the penny (half of the diameter D).
h is the height (cm).  First find D the diameter using a ruler D = ____cm.  So R = D/2 = _____cm
Let's find the height of 10 pennies in cm: H = ____ cm. So the height of one penny = H/10 = _____cm
So volume =
пR2 h = п x _____cm2 x _______cm = _______ cm3

activity11: The distance between your nose to your outstretched fingertips is about 1m. Position your self against the wall. Estimate the distance between you and one object in the center. Have the members in your group each estimates the distance between them and the object. Fill the table . then verify each distance using a meter stick.
Do it again for 2 more objects. Fill the table.

GOING FURTHER: geometry (try without hint)

1) One of the largest pizzas made (in Glens FAlls, NY) had a R= 40ft radius. WHat is the area of this crater (in ft)?
(hint: area = pi R2) .

2) Summer storm is circular in shape with a 50 mile long diameter. WHat area does this storm cover ? (in mi2)
(hint: first find R the radius = D/2)

3) One of the largest omelets made was cooked at Conestoga College, in Ontario, Canada. It measured 30ft by 10ft. WHat was the area of this rectangular omelet?
(hint: area = width x length)

4) THe volume of a rectangular prism (a box) is computed by multiplying width x length x height
If an average rectangular block of limestone used to to build the great pyramid of Khufu at Giza is approximately
2.5 feet by 3 feet by 4 feet land limestone weights approximately 170 pounds per cubic foot, what is the weight of the nearly 2,300,000 limestone blocks used to build the pyramid ?
hint: follow the steps:
A) Find the volume V of one block in ft3
B) Find the weight of 1 block (multiply V by 170)
C) Find the weight for 2,300,000 blocks (multiply)

5) Although the Exxon Valdez oil spill (11 million gallons of oil) is one of the most notorious oil spills, it was small compared to the 250 million gallons of crude oil that were spilled during the 1991 Persian Gulf  War. A gallon occupies 0.13368 cubic foot. How many rectangular pools, each 20 feet by 30 feet by 5 feet, could be filled with 250 millions gallons of crude oil ?
hint: follow the steps:
A) Find the volume V occupied by the 250 millions gallons. (multiply by 0.13368)
B) Find the volume v of a pool (in ft3)
C) find out many v can fit into V (divide V by v)
